How to Compliment a Woman Wearing Lingerie

Here is a woman and her lingerie … and here is you (remember De Niro in “Meet the Fockers”?)

We’ve all heard that a woman doesn’t choose her lingerie – not even her most delicate and sexy gear – to please men’s eyes. And that singles with no plans for intimate encounters indulge themselves with full collections of bras and tights that would make the alarm bell ring red in any Bond movie …

This doesn’t give us men an excuse to ignore the effect of a woman’s underwear by keeping silent. Compliments are expected. But beware, as you enter an emotional minefield. Forget any rational arguments about comfort, cut, colour, or material. And don’t be too blunt about how sexy these few pieces of fabric make her look to you.

Turn on your inner Bond

Try to address the real issue she faced while choosing her underwear: the way her choices would reveal her personality. Far beyond the simple choices of model or colour, she underwent an elaborate process of assessing which choices mirror her mood and the way she wants to be understood; which choices would interact best with her body and allow her mind to feel free and beautiful. Boiling it down to a sexist remark would destroy your seductive attempt like praising a Van Gogh painting by saying how colourful it is.

Try do decode the messages she gives through her outfit. Try to articulate the unspoken. Try to bring to words what it is that makes her look so special while being just less than nude. If you are sensitive to this you will live up to her expectations.

The rewards are well worth it

It isn’t easy. But working your way through this minefield is mutually rewarding. It puts you in delicate territories you wouldn’t have thought possible to explore. Even a good attempt will leave you both with an elevated sense of self-consciousness and an intimate connection from which hundreds of flowers can blossom.

What is a well-fitting bra?

A well-fitting bra… a million-dollar question

What is a well-fitting bra? It’s a million-dollar idea. Everyone has heard about it, very few have experienced it, and most prefer to discuss how uncomfortable their own bras are. For the next few weeks we will be sharing with you the critical bits of knowledge which will enable you to experience a perfect bra fit and give you the confidence to choose one for yourself without relying on anyone else. Feel the power!

The bra size reading isn’t everything

The foundation of any fit is the size. The size reading isn’t everything, but it’s a good starting point to get you to the perfect fit. It is essential to use the correct technique when measuring band size – this is where most mistakes are made. Work with a mirror and a partner and keep the tape measure parallel to the ground. Our tutorial will help you do this correctly.

3 Pillars of bra fit: the band, the straps, and the cups

The 3 pillars of the fit are: the band, the straps, and the cups. While all three are covered in our tutorial and video (click below), some bits deserve a special mention.

Insights for fuller bust: make it or break it with the band

The band will make or break the fit as it provides 80% of the support. It should fit snug yet comfortable enough to wear all day. A handy test is to run 2 fingers from the middle back to the side. Wearing a band that is too loose or too tight has bad effects on your health. We often see bloggers accepting a tight bra band for a desirable look. We wish they didn’t do this. A sure sign that the band is right is when the centre gore sits close to the sternum (chest bone) without protruding. Remember, a size is a reflection of your circumference. It is primarily designed to allow healthy blood flow and oxygen circulation.

The magic straps

The straps are where the magic happens. They have sliders at the back to adjust their length and give your breast a wonderful projection. While it varies culture-by-culture, the accepted UK beauty standard is the forward projection. Your nipple line should land somewhere in the middle of your upper arm. Another idea behind this is called “the drop” by stylists. It’s about following the proportions of your clothes to look well dressed.

The wires are to give you support, not to stab you in the heart

Lastly the underwires – also known as sneaky heart-stabbers. They give you more support. And they must not interfere with your breast tissue, but hold your breasts like a cradle. Good craftsmanship usually prevents irritating points, but it does help to follow a bra’s care instructions.

Who is the boss? You are

You are the boss when it comes to judging the comfort of your own bra. Your bra is not just something you look pretty in while lounging in your boudoir. You wear it all day every day, so besides the looks the function is key, especially for fuller busts. Strike a few poses and try the activities you normally do. Try your bra with clothes on. How does your favourite T-shirt or work blouse look with it? Do the seams show? Are your nipples covered? Can you lean forward and be confident your breast will not pop out? Are you comfortable with the feel and the looks? If it feels good and it looks good – it is good.

And if this still does not work …

If you are still not satisfied with the result, we run regular bra fitting workshops in London and would be happy to see you there.

At Ms Pomelo we believe knowledge gives confidence. Curvy Convention Report

Ms Pomelo first Curvy Convention experience: What we liked

With the real runway and curvy beauties as models the Curvy Convention had the electrifying atmosphere of a fashion show. But the volume was a notch above the common sanitised runways – more buoyant, proud, happy, festive, and celebrating the hard-earned Curvy title. The music was great. Kudos to the organisers for putting the event together.

Who blew our socks off? Silomo’s Boutique, Enjeanious by Rean, Voodoo Vixen, and Sydney’s Closet.

It was a great social for friends and the blogger community, and the curvy sirens were daring, self-assured, colour-loving, life-embracing—happy.

It was also good to see the specialist press (Gorgeous Brides Magazine) and retailers exploring the scene (Emma Plus).

We liked meeting new cool brands like Tortz and Coral+Co, and loved the Plus-Size Network initiative, a great idea of a Google-style quality pre-screened consumer directory for everything plus-size on Planet Earth (well, the UK side of it).

There was a strong international component to the event: South African Silomo’s Boutique and also the Danish Plus-Size Fashion Association, who just loved how daring and colourful the British Plus-Size Scene is.

We of course were busy dispelling the myths of bra-fitting to our visitors and telling our story to the press and retailers.

And we loved having our model-for-the-day blogger Amber In Red on the stand. She set our stand alight by wearing the Showstopper bra and by just being Amber. She is the Ambassador for The Body Confidence Revolution and we feel lucky to have formed a relationship with the best authority in the field.

What’s on our wish list for the next Curvy Convention?

More brands that professionally cater to plus-size figures.

A bigger crowd: the average size in the UK is 16 and the wish to be exciting and fashionable does not go away; so we believe there are many more women who would be interested in the event. They should be there!

Bloggers and the press getting more involved with the new brands on the scene. The established names are important but it’s only with the well-known and the fresh ideas together that the scene will spring and blossom as it’s ready to do.

Lingerie Buying Guide for Men

Cause for Excitement

Men, buying lingerie for your woman, or indeed women, is dangerous business. If you are afraid, good—do it anyway—mistakes are important. And really there is nothing to fear, only cause for excitement. Think of it: you find a woman beautiful. Now why would you not want to see her body adorned with underwear designed expressly to A. make her feel sexy and comfortable (thereby giving her more confidence) and to B. seduce you, her man? Don’t say, ‘Because I want to see her naked.’ Whilst that is a major concern, we can do better. Imagine what such a gesture of love from you will do to her, and in course to you …

Use Spy Skills: Which Shop, Style, Fabric, Fit, Size …

So visit her favourite shop. Talk to the saleswomen or read the reviews. Don’t be an ass. Develop your tastes and know hers. Why do you like/dislike that bra over another, and why would she? For instance my woman objects to balconette bras, and I can picture the slight disappointment behind her joy were I to offer her another red or black bra. And what about knickers? Think about materials; cotton, silk, various synthetics or mixtures. Geek out and get to know the styles available … And finally to the very lynchpin of all this effort. Get the size right. Here you get to use your spy-like cunning, rummaging in drawers as she bathes.

Prepare to Be Surprised

Or perhaps choose the gift together; that way she will try on items for your approval, and you would be pleased by the surprises that may come out of this. Even consider having a proper fitting. It’s shocking how many women don’t wear their true size and don’t know the dangers it poses to their health. In any case be bold and if it helps remember that you may get to undress her.
